Latest Emissions Gap Report released this week by the UN reveals that the collective commitments of all nations that are signed onto the Paris Climate Agreement are woefully insufficient to meet its objective, namely to limit warming to well below 2 degrees celsius and, ideally, 1.5 degrees celsius.
After a few years of stagnation, global carbon dioxide emissions are back on the rise and humanity is running out of time to ensure warming does not exceed the so-called safe limit. According to the new report, if countries' Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are not ramped up before 2030, we will no longer have a shot at keeping below 1.5 degrees.
To keep to the 2 degree scenario, global ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions must be increased approximately threefold, while the 1.5 degree scenario would require commitments to become five times as ambitious.
Current commitments expressed in the NDCs are inadequate to bridge the emissions gap in 2030. Technically, it is still possible to bridge the gap to ensure global warming stays well below 2°C and 1.5°C, but if NDC ambitions are not increased before 2030, exceeding the 1.5°C goal can no longer be avoided. Now more than ever, unprecedented and urgent action is required by all nations. The assessment of actions by the G20 countries indicates that this is yet to happen; in fact, global CO2 emissions increased in 2017 after three years of stagnation."
